Openwave Adds Automatic Detection Feature to Its Open Internet Browsing Solution
Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), one of the world’s
leading software innovators enabling revenue-generating personalized
services which converge the mobile and broadband experience, today
announced the latest version of its mobile Internet content adaptation
platform, Openwave OpenWeb 5.7, will include an automatic detection
feature to instantly identify whether content sites that are being
accessed via mobile devices are already mobile friendly or if they need
adapting.
The automatic detection feature identifies if the page the user wants to
view is already a mobile friendly page and if so sends it directly to
the phone with minimal changes. The new feature, dubbed "Mobile
Fetch First,” was developed by Openwave in
conjunction with Bango, the world’s first
global exchange for the mobile web. The feature supports mobile Web
initiative best practices from W3C, the leading web standards
consortium, and ensures that the integrity of mobile friendly sites is
respected by the transcoder using advanced profiling techniques to
establish what kind of content is being served. OpenWeb is a part of
Openwave Integra, a next generation service management proxy designed to
rapidly enable open, secure multimedia and multi-protocol service
deployment on converged networks.
"Web sites need to identify the types of
mobile device that are accessing their content, and if content that is
already optimized for WAP devices is again reformatted via a gateway, it
may create significant problems for all parties involved,”
said Ketan Kittur, director of product management, Openwave. "Openwave
OpenWeb 5.7 automatically identifies whether or not a selected website
requires reformatting to display correctly on the mobile device. We
believe this automatic detection feature will allow operators to deliver
a superior user experience on mobile devices without compromising
content providers.”
Openwave OpenWeb intercepts requests for all standard websites and
converts web pages into highly compressed, functional mobile
phone-compliant pages. The new automatic detection features ensure that
content already mobile friendly is not reformatted so all parties
involved in the mobile exchange, including third party aggregators and
billing specialists, are not obstructed by the mobile formatting process.
Bango’s mobile web platform is used by the
world’s leading content providers. As a
result, Bango has experienced the issue of re-formatting mobile data
firsthand when several of their content partners brought the issue to
their attention.
"Some of the earlier transcoders failed to
respect the intelligence that many websites incorporate to deliver a
great user experience across many different mobile devices,”
Anil Malhotra, SVP of Marketing at Bango. "Through
Openwave’s collaboration with Bango and
operators are benefiting from our combined experience with respect to
how to handle existing WAP websites when a transcoding solution is
activated on an operator’s network. We
believe Openwave 5.7 provides the best of both worlds for the growing
number of users browsing the mobile internet and in my opinion it is the
best available transcoding solution in the market. I would recommend it
to any network operator wanting to deploy this capability.”
Openwave OpenWeb is an open Internet browsing solution designed to
enable operators to offer consumers a broader range of content choices
by delivering full Internet web pages in a user friendly and intelligent
format to any mobile data enabled device. OpenWeb ensures the most
relevant sections of the website are delivered in the first or second
segmented deck so that users receive the most important data from the
website faster to their mobile device. Openwave OpenWeb is part of
Openwave’s suite of next generation service
management solutions that are designed to support the dramatic increase
in http-based traffic, and act as middleware to enable the delivery of
new applications and new services, including merchandising and
advertising opportunities.
