Nissan Under Investigation After Airbag Recall
(RTTNews) - The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reported to be probing if a recall last year by Nissan Motor Co failed to rectify a defect in the air-bag control systems on about 1 million vehicles.
This comes as motorists complained that the defect in the air-bag control systems persists despite repairs by dealers. Reports said the NHTSA opened a query recently, citing 124 complaints by motorists following the recall last April.
Last year, Nissan recalled 989,701 vehicles as the software may wrongly classify the passenger seat as empty despite it being occupied by an adult. The software error may result in the air bag from deploying in the event of a crash.
Vehicles in Nissan's recall included model year 2013-2014 Nissan Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and Leaf; 2013 Infiniti JX35; 2014 Infiniti QX60 and Q50; and 2013 Nissan NV 200/Taxi vehicles.
But Nissan says its recall measures were effective.
"Nissan Group believes the recall remedy was effective and appropriately addressed the safety defect," PropertyCasualty360.com reported, quoting Steve Yaeger, a spokesman at Nissan North America Inc. "Nissan and Infiniti also took additional steps to help dealers address residual customer concerns unrelated to the recall..."
Nissan is not alone as various automakers also had problems with airbags. Fiat Chrysler, Honda Motor and Toyota Motor had recalled more than 2 million vehicles in January because of air bags that could go off while driving.
