New 'Psychology Today' Editorial by Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Sovereign Health, on Measurement-Based Care

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Sovereign Health, a national behavioral health system, is proud to announce an important new Psychology Today editorial from Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, Chief Executive Officer of the company. The article is on measurement-based care, the practice of basing clinical care on client data collected throughout treatment. Dr. Sharma's article, "A Resolution to Embrace Measurement-Based Care in 2017," discusses the fact that MBC is effective in treating addiction, yet it is grossly underused and misunderstood as a standard of care in substance use disorder treatment.

"We know that quality health care, including substance use and addiction care, should be firmly rooted in established biomedical research. MBC is a core component of evidence-based practices," Dr. Sharma said. "Over the past decade, MBC has emerged as an incontrovertible, evidence-based method that can be used for virtually any health issue, and research has shown that applying MBC (such as monitoring symptom change using specific assessments) is beneficial for improving client outcomes."

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the United States is in the midst of an addiction crisis. To address this national emergency, health care professionals nationwide must adopt strategies proven to combat substance use in their patients. MBC is considered a core component of numerous evidence-based practices, has transtheoretical and transdiagnostic relevance with broad reach across clinical settings, provides insight into treatment progress, highlights ongoing treatment targets, reduces symptom deterioration and improves patient outcomes.

Dr. Tonmoy Sharma has been recognized with numerous awards, honors and grants for his work in advancing mental health and its treatment in the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia. He currently co-hosts KABC 790 AM's "In Your Right Mind," a cutting-edge, weekly radio show that covers various topics in behavioral health.
