New Commtouch GlobalView Mail Reputation Service Enhances Email Infrastructure Performance, Reduces Network Burden

Commtouch (NASDAQ:CTCH) today announced the availability of its new GlobalView™ Mail Reputation Service, a perimeter protection layer that offloads the majority of spam, malware and phishing messages before they enter corporate networks, and identifies zombie-sent messages in real-time. The end-result is significant savings in bandwidth, storage and processing power. Spam reached a new all-time high of 95% of all email during the third quarter of 2007. Zombies, or bots, typically send 85% of all unwanted mail, which then clogs inbound email pipes, messaging servers and storage facilities. By enabling the blocking of over 80% of this email volume at the network edge, GlobalView significantly reduces the burden on internal email systems. "The tremendous increase in the volume of spam and email-borne threats over the past 12 months has made it necessary to find new methods for intercepting unwanted mail at the network entrance — reputation services are a critical part of this next generation of capabilities,” said Michael Osterman, principal of Osterman Research. "Commtouch’s GlobalView Mail Reputation Service provides effective real-time ranking for every sender trying to send email to an organization, significantly reducing the mass of mail that would otherwise come into the network.” Blocking Email Threats at the Perimeter Unlike backend email filtering solutions that are typically situated inside the network and must receive complete email messages before filtering them, Commtouch GlobalView enables blocking at the message entry point, before the email message is transmitted. Based on a real-time risk assessment of sender reliability, GlobalView distinguishes between "good” and "bad” senders with only the knowledge of the sender’s IP address. By blocking messages during the email session, the inbound email traffic can be deferred long before it is received by the mail servers. At the same time, legitimate senders receive bandwidth priority, so ‘good’ email is expedited instead of competing with junk mail for IT resources. The resulting benefits for enterprises and service providers include: Reduced IT expenditures – optimized use of IT resources; reduced bandwidth, storage, backup, and number of mail servers. Increased security -- the majority of email-borne viruses, worms and Trojans are filtered before they enter the network, increasing overall organizational security. Improved compliance status – most email messages never reach the mail server, thus decreasing storage for regulatory compliance purposes. How GlobalView Works The GlobalView™ Mail Reputation Service is founded on Commtouch’s unique bird’s eye view of email, sampled from highly diverse traffic sources from over 180 countries. Commtouch Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD™) technology analyzes over one billion messages per day to determine the sender patterns of spam and virus-infested messages, and identifies deviations from regular sending patterns. As a result, GlobalView can identify zombies/bots within minutes of their being activated as part of an email outbreak, resulting in a GlobalView-recommended action for licensing partners’ products. "Rapid response to changes in the zombie environment is crucial, since on average, hundreds of thousands of zombies are newly activated each day,” said Amir Lev, Commtouch’s chief technology officer. "Zombies tend to enter dormant periods, but once they are pulled into participating in a spam or malware outbreak, GlobalView is dynamically aware of the change and identifies them immediately.” In addition to identifying zombie hosts, GlobalView relies on historical and up-to-the-minute data to accurately classify legitimate senders, including corporations and newsletter publishers. "Based on our early success with licensing our Reputation Service, we see a growing market for GlobalView,” said Gideon Mantel, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Commtouch. "Developing a reputation service is a serious challenge, with high barriers to entry, making licensing GlobalView a natural choice for technology vendors. We expect GlobalView to provide an additional anchor for Commtouch in key market segments such as service providers and networking vendors.” Availability GlobalView Mail Reputation Service is an enhanced version of the company’s Reputation Service which was released last year, and has been licensed by several leading firms. GlobalView is available for license to vendors, and supports all standard Mail Transfer Agent platforms.
