"While today's unemployment report shows signs of continued improvement, it is still well below the level of job growth needed to drive a robust economic growth in our communities. As local leaders, we remain committed to finding ways to deliver services and invest in our local communities that will support long term economic vitality.
"The marginal increase in the number of employed individuals is a consequence of what we observed this week - a Congress that cannot even manage to agree on basic appropriations bills. Until such time as the House, the Senate, and the White House can come together on a balanced approach to managing the federal deficit and making smart investments in the nation's long term future, too many families and individuals will be in search of work.
"As cities and towns continue to do their part, we will continue to insist that Washington do its part by supporting investments in infrastructure and human capital that will help put people to work in good paying jobs and support future growth.
The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
