NACF President to Help Promote Green Jobs in Virginia
National Clean Fuels (PinkSheets: NACF) President and CEO Maurice Stone will be on hand in Virginia Beach, Va., today to help introduce a cooperative effort between the National Black Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Training Solutions to prepare minority contractors for green job opportunities.
At a press conference scheduled for today, the NBCC plans to announce a cooperative effort with STS to launch a national minority contractor recruitment and training program. Stone is the chairman of the NBCC’s energy committee.
"By partnering with the National Black Chamber of Commerce, STS hopes to offer the resources necessary to create much needed training and job opportunities in the green construction industry in the Hampton Roads area and across the country,” said Carletta Waddler, CEO of Sustainable Training Systems. "It’s our hope that these opportunities will benefit minority-owned contractors, employees, and construction workers in the midst of this sluggish economy.”
The announcement of the job-creation program is scheduled to take place at the headquarters of SENCON, a minority-owned business local to Virginia Beach. Other local minority contractors will be on hand to sign contractor participation agreements with STS.
"I’m very pleased to be a part of this program,” Stone said. "Not only will this program benefit underserved communities struggling in a recovering economy, it also helps to fulfill National Clean Fuels’ mission to promote a cleaner, more energy-efficient future for our children.”
The collaborative project aims to train 116 contractors and 29 certified energy auditors to perform 5,000 energy-efficient retrofits of homes and small businesses in Hampton Roads. The Hampton Roads Green Jobs Alliance has secured a $3.5 million Better Buildings grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help market and incentivize energy-efficient retrofits to local home and small business owners. The non-profit organization projects that the joint recruitment and training efforts could result in millions of dollars in annual utility savings and increased real estate values as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 9.72 percent in the program’s first year.
