Miners Rally 10% In One Day -- Canadian Commentary
(RTTNews) - Canadian stocks rose Friday, with metal stocks surging on the rally in commodity prices.
Gold jumped to a 15-month high, silver futures continued to soar, and crude oil prices jumped above $46 a barrel after a 20% monthly gain.
The loonie was at 80 cents US, the best in 2016.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 65.02 points to 13,951.45.
The Diversified Metals and Mining Index skyrocketed 10% today.
TransCanada Corp. (TRP.TO) reported a first-quarter profit of $252 million, down 35% from a year ago. Shares were flat.
Imperial Oil Ltd. (IMO.TO) on Friday reported a first-quarter loss of $73.6 million. The stock was down 1%.
Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX.TO) filed its overdue annual report. Valeant said threats of defaults were "cured in all respects" by the report's filing. Shares fell 5.5%.
