Lenovo Disables All Server Activity Associated With Superfish
(RTTNews) - Chinese personal computers maker Lenovo announced that it has completely disabled server side interactions (since January) of Superfish, an adware program, on all Lenovo products so that the software product is no longer active, effectively disabling Superfish for all products in the market. Lenovo has also issued instructions on its support page to completely remove the software.
Superfish intercepts HTTP(S) traffic using a self-signed root certificate. This is stored in the local certificate store and provides a security concern. Lenovo said although the application can be uninstalled; the current uninstaller does not remove the Superfish root certificate.
The company said Superfish was previously included on some consumer notebook products shipped between September 2014 and February 2015 to assist customers with discovering products similar to what they are viewing. Since user feedback was not positive, Lenovo ordered the pre-load removal of Superfish in January. The company said it will not preload this software in the future.
