Kazi Hasan Media: Pioneers of Robotic Neuro-Rehab: Prywata, Hogan and Krebs
NEW YORK, April 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In the US there is a stroke victim every 4 seconds and a stroke related death every 4 minutes. Of the nearly 660,000 stroke survivors annually, about half will have some physical or cognitive impairment requiring support for daily activities. Recent developments in robotic neuro-rehabilitation will vastly improve the quality of life of the disabled in the very near future. Yet, very little is known about the pioneers in this space. One such person is Michal Prywata.
Prywata invented world's first brain-controlled robotic prosthetic arm while an undergraduate biomedical engineering student at Ryerson. He co-founded Bionik Laboratories. Last year Bionik acquired Interactive Motion Technologies. According to Prywata 'IMT is a leader in robotics because it was founded by two well known MIT professors, Neville Hogan and Hermano Krebs. They are considered pioneers of the industry and have created immense amounts of data for the field of neuro-rehabilitation and robotics. Intellectual properties developed at MIT and Newman Laboratory for Biomechanics led by Drs Hogan and Krebs have been developed over many years based on strong neuroscience principles and create a strong foundation for Bionik's robotic platforms that are either in the market or in development today'.
Bionik has several FDA approved products in the market and portfolio of products in the pipeline. There are essentially two platforms, neuro-recovery for stroke victims and assistive for the mobility impaired patients to walk with exoskeleton.
Prywata, Drs Hogan and Krebs have brought about intellectual depth and entrepreneurial enthusiasm in the much needed stroke victim rehabilitation area that is already making inroads in the medical world. They are different than others in their approach. Once again in Prywata's own words ' Bionik's primary differentiator is that it is the only company in the world with significant clinical data and evidence of efficacy. The neuro-recovery robots have been tested and proven to be effective over a thousand patients. Bionik is also unique in that it has platforms being developed for clinical as well as home use, which is a broader and more significant market'.
Neuro-recovery and assistive robots will change our lifestyle in the near future. It's impact may be greater than anything else on the horizon yet we know little about those who are the pioneers in this field. Hopefully it will change soon.
