Jabil’s Nypro Healthcare Operation Takes Second Place in Institute of Industrial Engineers’ Lean Competition

Jabil’s Nypro Healthcare Ireland operation, a recognized leader in the development and manufacturing of complex drug delivery devices, was named the second place winner of this year’s Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Lean Best Practice Award for their Lean design of a new Healthcare Manufacturing Facility in Waterford, Ireland project.

"The IIE 2015 Best Practice Award is a true recognition of Jabil’s Nypro Ireland team that established a state of the art medical device manufacturing facility in only eight months using Lean design methodology," said Walter Garvin, Vice President of Global Lean Six Sigma. "We are very proud of both of our teams from Waterford, Ireland and Venray, Netherlands that competed in the finals of this prestigious Lean competition. These projects exemplify Jabil's strong Lean culture."

The award was presented to two of Jabil’s Nypro Healthcare team members, Ken McClannon and Sean Roche, by IIE Executives at an awards ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee on June 1. The Nypro team competed against five other teams, including The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bosch Hungary, Boeing, Nokia and Jabil’s team from Venray. Judged by IIE members and Lean experts from various industries, the team was ranked based on their innovation, clarity, tools used, results and the project’s sustainability.

"This project was a great achievement for Nypro Healthcare and to have it recognized on such a global stage as the IIE awards is fantastic for our team in Waterford. The standard of the competition entries was excellent and it was a great opportunity for us to both represent our team and to see what other leading global organisations are doing with Lean," said Ken McClannon, Nypro Healthcare's Senior Director of Programs and Engineering for the Pharmaceutical Delivery Services Group and project leader.

The IIE competition was established four years ago to recognize the innovative and effective implementation of lean principles and practices that deliver exemplary performance improvements. Past winners come from some of the world’s leading organizations, including IBM, Xerox, the University of Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, MAS Linea Aqua and Jabil Shanghai (2014 winner).

Jabil’s Lean program was officially launched five years ago and now spans the company’s 90 plants in 24 countries delivering more than 86,900 improvement projects in 2014. The company has been able to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce variations, defects, costs and non-value added activities improving process value stream flow and delivering customer products in the most effective way. Many industry experts have recognized Jabil for their Lean program and powerful capabilities.
