IT and Engineering Employment Growth Rates Continue To Decelerate

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The number of IT jobs grew 0.1 percent sequentially last month to 5,170,600, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment grew by 2.9% since October 2015 adding 146,500 IT workers.

Engineering employment remains sluggish, growing only 0.02 percent sequentially to 2,538,600.  On a year-over-year basis, growth in engineering employment was anemic increasing by only 0.6% since October 2015 or 15,100 engineering workers.

"While the rate of growth in IT employment is at its low ebb for the year, the slowdown is not uniformly distributed across all skill sets and sectors. The unemployment rate for some IT occupations is under 2%--below what would be considered full employment.  Further, there remains a significant imbalance between supply and demand for highly sought after skill sets in both IT and engineering," stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance.
