Intervoice Speech Expert Spurs Students to Design and Produce Speech Recognition Systems; Intervoice to Sponsor Tufts University's Speech Applications Awards Ceremony

Intervoice, Inc. (Nasdaq:INTV), a world leader inconverged voice and information solutions, today announced it willsponsor Tufts University's Speech Applications awards ceremony takingplace at The Cabot Intercultural Center at Tufts University, Boston,on Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. ET. The awards honoroutstanding achievements in speech application innovation and designby students participating in the "Engineering Psychology Study inHuman Systems" class. The class, co-taught by Blade Kotelly, directorof Intervoice's Design and Usability Collaborative, and Joe Lemay, student at MIT Sloan School of Management, teaches students to designand develop fully-functioning prototypes of speech recognitionsystems, program VoiceXML, and cast and direct voice talent.

The awards ceremony will highlight a number of workingapplications developed by students. Applications include:

-- iRing by Joe Cerra and Piti Itharat -- This application leverages the students' patent-pending technology enabling users to call into a speech recognition system, select a song from their iTunes music library and send it, as a ring-tone, to their cell phone or to a friend's. Users can simply say the title of the song they would like to download or they can navigate the system using voice commands such as "get favorites" or "search by genre" to narrow down their song choices. When the user calls into the system, the application connects with the iTunes music library in real-time and generates recognition grammars that the application uses to accurately understand a single spoken word or phrase which could be included in any of over 15,000 song names, 1,600 artist names or 175 genres. Once a song has been chosen, users can select any 20-second excerpt of the song, add a fade in or fade out if desired, and then send the song as a ring tone to any Cingular mobile device.

-- FiTracker by David Donatelli -- This system is a virtual fitness trainer that enables users to call in to a speech recognition system, log in and be given a workout routine customized for the type of gym they have access to (large, mini, or no gym at all). The workout routine is tailored to ensure that the user focuses on different areas of the body over the course of several workouts. The users can hear the workout in a quick-list, detailed-list or an hour long pod-cast which will automatically sync up with their iPod and walk them step-by-step through their daily workout.

"More than a third of the students who have taken this class inthe past three years have gotten jobs in the industry asspeech-interface designers. And it all started with giving thestudents the opportunity to turn the ideas they dream up into realityby using state-of-the-art speech technology and cutting-edge designtechniques. They're pushing creative boundaries in the speechindustry," said Kotelly. "The course also helps students go beyonddesign and production to delve into the business aspects of usingtechnology to bridge communication between two parties. This kind ofknowledge and experience helps arm students with insight they canapply immediately on the job."

The awards ceremony will also feature two student-developedprototype speech systems. JoeyTalk, created by Karen Lin, SteveMyrthil and Hao Tran, illustrates the way students will be able to getreal-time GPS information about the Tufts shuttle bus system (calledthe Joey by students). The Massachusetts Hospital Hotline, created byAugustin Carr, Alexis Liistro and Denise Lyn-Shue, addresses the 2007Massachusetts initiative requiring that all residents havehealth-insurance by providing automated HIPPA-compliant access toinformation and transactions.
