SMITH & WESSON LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE AED LINE; FIRST RESPONDERS TO HAVE A BETTER TOOL TO SAVE LIVES
Smith & Wesson (AMEX:SWB), the legendary 153-year old firearms maker and premier law enforcement company, announces the introduction of its new second generation Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at the upcoming Shot Show in Las Vegas (North Pavilion, Booth 8007) on January 28. The Smith & Wesson "Heartbeat" AED is manufactured by a well known and highly respected 90 year-old U.S. based medical products manufacturer of defibrillators and other medical equipment and is marketed by Pride Development Holdings, Inc. (Pink Sheets:PDVG), the exclusive worldwide S&W AED licensee. Utilizing new technology, the unit and associated accessories simplify defibrillator usage for non-medical personnel and substantially increase the probability of saving the life of a victim who has suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
"It's the ultimate tool for the first responder when confronted with a victim who appears lifeless," says Dr. Alan B. Knopf, M.D., Pride Business Development Holdings' Homeland Security Medical Product Consultant. "Up to 1200 people die each day in America from Cardiac Arrest, but we can save 30 to 70% of them if we can get a police officer with an AED to them in the first 5 minutes." The availability of AEDs is increasing in public places, but this new Smith & Wesson program will focus on getting them into police cars and other emergency vehicles which have the best chance of responding quickly. "Pride Business Development Holdings is pleased to be part of this new initiative, and to supply a one-button system that is fool-proof," said Dr. Knopf. Dr. Alan B. Knopf, M.D. is also a certified member of the Homeland Security Preparedness and Compliance Team.
The new Smith & Wesson Heartbeat AED uses the proven "1-2-3" rescue approach which is ideal for the non-medical user. By following text messages together with voice prompts, virtually anyone can operate this lifesaving device. The instrument automatically determines if a lifesaving shock is required and protects against inappropriate delivery of a shock. At just 3.5 pounds, the Heartbeat unit is small, lightweight and portable using a long life lithium battery, and has a rapid 5-second charge cycle when time is the enemy.
"The new Heartbeat AED is the latest in a series of Smith & Wesson law enforcement products that will be coming from Pride Business Development Holdings, Inc. in the next 12 months," said Pride's President Ari L. Markow. "Our mandate is to create products demanded by our changing world, and we don't work in any more important arenas than helping the first responder to save lives. The Smith & Wesson heritage of support for law enforcement needs, combined with our AED manufacturer's medical technology will be a powerful force in improving the first responder's ability to deal with the SCA crisis. Pride Business Development Holdings, Inc. is proud to be a part of such a noble endeavor."
"Surrounding the law enforcement officer with the tools to better serve the community has been a primary mandate of the Smith & Wesson Company for 153 years," said Tom Taylor, Smith & Wesson's Vice President of Marketing. "Police officers are in the business of saving lives, and we want to compliment their efforts with the highest performance products that we can muster -- now to include a new generation of AEDs that are simple, totally portable and very effective. These are the people who are there when the crisis happens, and communities are increasingly aware of the need for effective new products like our new Heartbeat AED in the hands of the first responder."
ABOUT AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS
An automated external defibrillator ("AED") is an easy-to-use, automated device that delivers a life-saving electric shock to the heart to halt rapid and chaotic heart activity, commonly known as Sudden Cardiac Arrest, in order to restore normal heart rhythm. Approximately 1,200 people a day die in America from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Currently, a person who suffers Sudden Cardiac Arrest outside of a hospital and without an AED on hand, has a five percent chance of surviving. Clinical studies have shown the survival rate of those suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest increases to 30 to 70 percent when an AED is available and used on a victim within five minutes from the onset of a cardiac arrest.
AED's are now being used and are in great demand by first responders including law enforcement, fire and EMT personnel, and are also being widely deployed at places where people gather or work, including airplanes, airports, commercial business offices, factories, schools, shopping centers, tourist attractions, stadiums, restaurants, and federal, state, and municipal government buildings and facilities.
