Huron Consulting Group Bolsters Healthcare Compliance and Investigative Services
Huron Consulting Group (NASDAQ: HURN), a leading provider of business consulting services, today announced that Michael T. Dougherty has joined the Company as a managing director within the Company’s Health and Education Consulting segment to provide leadership for Huron’s healthcare compliance and investigative services (HCI). Dougherty will lead the expansion of the Company’s compliance and investigative service offerings to the healthcare provider market.
"Many of our clients are challenged by the effects of healthcare reform and the significant impact the new laws will have on their compliance programs. These effects will accelerate with healthcare regulatory change in the years ahead,” said James H. Roth, chief executive officer, Huron Consulting Group. "As a market leader in healthcare consulting, Huron’s addition of Michael’s investigative and compliance background and his experience in leading organizations through regulatory and organizational transformation will be a tremendous resource to our clients as they address the myriad of complex issues related to reform.”
Huron continues to invest in regulatory compliance related services to address the rapidly increasing demand created by existing law and emerging regulations of healthcare reform. The recently passed legislation expands the False Claims Act and the federal Anti-Kickback Statute, increases federal investigative powers, mandates new compliance program requirements, and enhances penalties for non-compliance. This significantly increases the exposure of healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, and medical device manufacturers to civil and criminal liability.
Dougherty comes to Huron from Acuity, a firm that he founded in 2006 focused on international regulatory investigations and implementation of compliance programs across industries. Huron and Acuity have worked together since forming an alliance in 2008. Dougherty also advised Huron in connection with the expansion of the Company’s international operations. Prior to Acuity, Dougherty was a member of the founding staff of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). At DHS, he was the first deputy and director of operations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a global law enforcement and intelligence agency operating in 42 countries. Dougherty also has extensive consulting experience, including forensic services at a "Big Four” firm, where he provided advisory services to clients conducting internal investigations of fraud and misconduct and regulatory and ethics compliance.
