Hubbell Lighting Illuminates Phoenix Children’s Hospital

Hubbell Lighting, an industry leader in lighting technology for over a century, is pleased to announce its participation in illuminating the dramatic expansion of Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH).

What began a little over a quarter century ago as a vision to serve the healthcare needs of Arizona children, has blossomed to become Arizona’s only licensed children’s hospital and one of the 10 largest freestanding facilities of its kind in the country.

Now, in response to the growing pediatric population in its market area, the hospital is approaching the completion of a $588 million expansion plan begun in 2008 and scheduled for a grand opening this June. Included in the expansion is an 11-story patient tower that incorporates six centers of excellence (COE) -- center for cancer and blood disorders, children’s neuroscience institute, children’s heart center, center for pediatric orthopedic surgery, newborn intensive care unit, and a level 1 pediatric trauma center. In addition to the hospital’s centers of excellence, the patient tower will also nearly double available beds to over 600.

As a result of this effort, PCH will be the premier pediatric center in the Southwest, and will be nationally recognized as one of the country’s top 2 destinations for pediatric medical care, innovative research, and education for the next generation of pediatric specialists.

CCRD Partners of Houston, TX, was the electrical engineering firm who specified the general illumination throughout the 770,000 sq. ft. hospital, and Arizona Lighting Sales, the Hubbell Lighting agent serving greater Arizona, handled the order including fluorescent lighting, recessed downlighting, exit lighting, and outdoor parking garage lighting for this project. Representing 4 of the 22 lighting brands under the Hubbell Lighting corporate umbrella, the lighting fixtures include fluorescent direct/indirect troffers and specification grade troffers from Columbia Lighting; Compact fluorescent recessed downlighting from Prescolite; LED exit signage from Dual-Lite, and outdoor garage lighting from Kim Lighting.

According to Scott Oldner, head of the Dallas, TX lighting design firm bearing his name, "In addition to ccrd’s general illumination plan, the lighting challenge his firm faced was to create an oasis in the desert, an immersive escape, for the hospital’s patients and families for distraction from what ails the children.” Lighting, he said, played a major role in the concept while adhering to the local dark sky ordinance and the project’s sustainability requirements.

As a result of Oldner’s lighting design carried out on the first floor, PCH has become a community icon and beacon that is easily seen for 20-25 miles from almost any direction. Among his unique lighting treatments both indoor and outdoor, is a waterfall of light without bringing in water, and LED lights incorporated into the terrazzo floor in the atrium where kids can jump from one light to the other as they watch the lights change color. Further, low-wattage, high-output LED strips dramatically outline the building’s distinctive architectural fins.

By 2030, the number of children in metro Phoenix alone is projected to increase to more than 1.5 million, compared to 900,000 today. To serve this anticipated local growth, and the needs of sick children nationally, the PCH patient tower represents the center point of the new hospital facility and anchors an expansion plan going out to 2020.
