Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Launches New Social Studies Program for Grades 6-12
BOSTON, Nov. 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Global learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) today announced the release of HMH Social Studies ©2018, its new, next generation social studies curricula for grades 6 through 12. The comprehensive program covers history, civics, psychology, government, geography and economics. Program highlights include document-based investigations and new, analytic skills activities that help students examine source material and foster critical thinking abilities.
New content and partnerships with third parties like HISTORY®, Maps.com, and Google provide in-depth coverage of key historical events with interactive features, videos, games, and audio narrations. A focus on primary sources addresses the need to teach students media literacy and the value of fact checking, which is increasingly critical in the digital age.
HMH Social Studies also includes on and offline digital delivery and cutting edge design that enables the accessibility necessary for today's connected student. Customizable offline digital delivery is available via the HMH Player app, allowing students to access their curriculum regardless of internet accessibility. Additionally, a responsive design template customizes digital content for a seamless user experience that adapts to whatever type of device the student is using.
"Social Studies is a vital lens through which our students come to understand the world they live in," said Mary Cullinane, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. "Building civic awareness in our young people is one of our greatest responsibilities as educators and this program includes new ways to meet that responsibility."
Key HMH Social Studies features include:
- HMH Field Trips powered by Google Expeditions, which allow classes to take virtual reality field trips aligned to curriculum, including trips to Washington D.C. and back in time to the Oregon Trail and Alamo;
- HISTORY® Multimedia Connections, which provide in-depth coverage of key historical events with interactive features, video and primary sources;
- Close Read Screencasts, audio narrations that provide students with examples of analytic conversations that delve into historical content and primary sources;
- Map Connections, from Maps.com, give students access to interactive maps, games and data.
Both digital and print versions of HMH Social Studies will be available for the 2017-18 school year. For more information or to sign up for a free trial, please visit http://www.hmhco.com/shop/education-curriculum/social-studies/hmh-social-studies.
