Herbalife Family Foundation Brings Good Nutrition to Children in Need in Spain and Portugal
The Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) has established two new Casa Herbalife programs to help bring good nutrition to children at the SOS Children’s Village, Madrid, Spain and Obra Do Frei Gil in Oporto, Portugal. In 2005, HFF introduced Casa Herbalife, a program to help provide healthy and nutritious meals by partnering with existing charities serving children. This program for children-at-risk is named after Casa Herbalife, an orphanage HFF built in Brazil in 1998 and continues to support today. These new programs bring the total number of Casa Herbalife programs established worldwide to 20. SOS Children’s Village, Madrid, looks after 60 abandoned children up to 16 years old, in a total of 13 homes, providing a stable home environment for those who are orphaned or cannot be with their own family for a number of social reasons. The HFF donation will go towards helping the facility provide nutritious meals for the children, as well as to upgrade some of the kitchen facilities. There are a total of eight SOS Children’s Villages in Spain and more than 400 worldwide. Obra do Frei Gil in Portugal was established in 1942 by Friar Gil Alfreres. Today it comprises four children’s homes and two nurseries in four locations. The homes care for children from problematic or very poor families, are homeless or at risk for a number of reasons. The organization works to provide a home environment for approximately 150 children with affection, wellness, education and a sense of family. HFF’s donation will be used to outfit the kitchen at the charity's new facility in Oporto, where one of the homes and two of the nurseries are being centralized into one new location to provide for 34 children from infants to 14 years old. Moving forward, both programs will be supported on an ongoing basis by local Herbalife independent distributors. The Herbalife Family Foundation is a private, non-profit organization supported by Herbalife Ltd., its independent distributors, employees, friends and families. Created in 1994 by Herbalife founder Mark Hughes, the Herbalife Family Foundation's mission is helping children in need by offering support in overcoming life's most basic challenges, from escaping poverty, hunger and abuse to receiving adequate medical care and education. In addition to developing Casa Herbalife programs worldwide, HFF often responds to natural disasters by establishing special funds, as it did for victims of the tsunamis, earthquake and hurricanes that struck in 2004 and 2005.
