Google To Shut Down Google News In Spain
(RTTNews) - Internet giant Google Inc. (GOOGL, GOOG) said Thursday that it will have to close its news service in Spain due to a new intellectual property law that the European country is going to adopt next year.
In a blog post, the Mountain View, California company said it will remove Spanish publishers from Google News and close Google News in Spain on December 16, weeks before the new law comes into effect in January.
The new legislation requires every Spanish publication to charge services like Google News for showing even the smallest snippet from their publications, whether they want to or not.
"As Google News itself makes no money (we do not show any advertising on the site) this new approach is simply not sustainable," Richard Gingras, head of Google News, wrote in the blog post.
Google News is currently available in more than 70 international editions, covering 35 languages.
GOOGL is currently trading at $536.54, up $8.50 or 1.61%, while GOOG is currently trading at $532.86, up $6.80 or 1.29%.
