Gateway Health Receives Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award For Volunteerism

PITTSBURGH, March 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Gateway Health is among 13 local companies to receive the "2017 Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award" for exemplary community volunteerism. The awards will be presented Thursday evening, March 23 at Hotel Monaco, downtown. Gateway Health encourages employees to use their annual paid volunteer day to volunteer with an organization of their choice.  Various teams within Gateway will also join forces and organize a volunteer event as a group at an organization that touches Gateway members. As a result, Gateway Health employees often take advantage of  many of United Way's volunteer opportunities. In the past year, Gateway has volunteered at numerous local charitable events, including, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, Catholic Charities, The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes and the United Way, to name a few.

"Gateway Health is honored to be a recipient of this iconic community service awards that truly recognizes the value of volunteerism and giving back to the communities we serve. We take great pride in supporting organizations that align with our mission and serve our members, and other deserving individuals and families in the communities where they live. I'm personally proud that so many Gateway staff members serve on local community boards and participate in service projects that directly impact our members. As Fred Rogers himself would say, 'Today is a beautiful day in the neighborhood,' and we're hoping we can help make it a little more beautiful," says Patricia J. Darnley, President and CEO, Gateway Health.

Fred Rogers was a beloved Pittsburgh icon who, with his famous red cardigan sweater and blue canvas tennis shoes made learning fun for the educational preschool television series Mr. Rogers Neighborhood from 1968 until his retirement in 2001.  At the time of his death in 2003, he received more than 40 honorary degrees, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2002) from President George W. Bush, several Daytime Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame (1999). A larger than life memorial statue of Fred Rogers sits on the North Shore by the Manchester Bridge.

In 2010, The United Way established the Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Award to honor the legacy of Fred Rogers. Local companies are selected each year who embody his spirit of volunteerism. The event is planned around his birthday, along with community outreach activities and celebrations, which are attended by former cast members and puppets from his show.
