Frontier Communications Extends Broadband Commitments
Frontier Communications Corporation (NYSE: FTR) today refuted the conclusion of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Sixth Report to Congress that "broadband deployment to all Americans is not reasonable and timely.” Frontier, the largest provider of communications services to rural America, has a best-in-class track record regarding broadband deployment to our nation’s rural areas.
According to Steve Crosby, Senior Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs for Frontier, "Our coverage record reflects a 6-year commitment of resources privately funded by our shareholders and bondholders. Even with an average density of just 13 homes per square mile, Frontier has delivered High-Speed broadband service to 92 percent of the homes and business in its legacy territories. In addition, the company has distributed more than 90,000 free PCs and Netbooks through various marketing programs to address a significant hurdle to broadband adoption — the lack of a home computer.
"On July 1, 2010, we completed a transformational transaction with Verizon, adding millions of new customers in rural America,” Crosby added. "In the tradition of Frontier, we will spend ample capital over the next 12 months to provide our new customers with the high-quality phone, broadband Internet and television services they deserve. Our commitment is aggressive and on the record: Frontier will extend broadband service of 3 Mbps download speed to at least 85 percent of all homes and businesses over a 3-year period.”
The FCC is focused upon shifting Universal Service funding away from voice to broadband in a transition over several years. Frontier supports this concept and is working with the Commission on this opportunity.
"We look forward to working with the FCC on extending broadband and improving speeds and capacity – even in unserved and underserved areas.” Crosby concluded.
