Federal Trade Commission Accuses DirecTV Of Deceptive Ads; Seeks Refund
(RTTNews) - U.S. Federal Trade Commission Thursday said it would seek millions in refund from satellite television provider DirecTV, which has misled subscribers through deceptive advertisements. The consumer protection agency said the company made deceptive claims or omission of facts in the advertisement and its website. According to reports more than 20 million subscribers will get the benefit of refund.
The DirecTV has offered a discounted one-year package and customers had to pay higher rates for a renewal for the second year. If the service is disconnected, the subscribers have to pay $20 for each month remaining in the discounted package, the agency said.
According to reports, the satellite provider charged for a free three-month trial of premium channels such as HBO, Showtime, etc. if the consumers failed to terminate the service after the free period. However, DirecTV denied the allegations.
