FBI Selects Captiva's InputAccel for Major Document Capture Initiative; Records Management Division to Streamline Access to Information at FBI Field Offices

    Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 8, 2005--Captiva Software Corporation (NASDAQ:CPTV), a leading provider of input management solutions, today announced that the Records Management Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has selected InputAccel(R), Captiva's award-winning document capture software, to transform documents and photographs used in criminal and terrorism investigations into electronic content for more streamlined access at FBI field offices. The total value of the software, services and hardware portion of the contract to Captiva exceeds $2 million to date.
The Records Management Division will utilize InputAccel in its Document Conversion Lab (DocLab) and National Name Check Program centers to capture digital images of hard copy files and photographs. Through optical character recognition (OCR) technology, index data for retrieval purposes will be extracted and the images will then be made accessible to field offices across the organization. The FBI expects that InputAccel will help increase DocLab's daily image throughput from approximately 10,000 images per day to more than 200,000, with an eventual goal of more than 600,000 images per day.
DocLab's use of InputAccel is part of an ongoing effort to update and modernize the FBI's records management systems. Increasing sophistication and volume of criminal, terrorist and foreign intelligence elements have heightened the need for timely information capture and coordination of related investigative activities within the FBI, and between the FBI and other intelligence agencies.
"Much of the critical information the FBI utilizes in investigations is on some type of paper media, and capturing that information and transforming it into an electronic format is the key to rapid information exchange. InputAccel will enable FBI's DocLab to capture millions of additional documents and quickly make critical information available to Bureau field offices, joint task forces and the FBI Headquarters," said Howard Dratler, Captiva's Executive Vice President of Field Operations. "The FBI is another great federal government customer win for Captiva, and we were pleased to work with our federal distribution partner Promark Technology on this sale."
Dratler added that the FBI selected Captiva's software due in part to multiple customer references proving InputAccel's ability to quickly and accurately capture and process upwards of a million images per day. The Bureau also chose InputAccel for its load balancing capability, which will enable DocLab to simultaneously operate ten or more OCR servers for maximum productivity in analyzing the content contained within the documents.
