Dogpile.com Releases Most Popular Search Terms of 2009

Dogpile®, a search engine owned by InfoSpace, Inc. (NASDAQ:INSP) that combines results from all major search engines, examined its "favorite fetches,” searched by its millions of Internet users this year, to release its most popular searches of 2009.

While the 2009 New Year began with fetches about the Presidential First Dog Bo, it wrapped up with searches of a wilder breed with the "New Moon” wolf, symbolizing just how unruly the year became. From concerns about the swine flu and rising unemployment to news about Wall Street executives and politicians behaving badly, many Dogpile.com users searched the Web site for every topic from resource information to the latest gossip.

"This year’s top results mirrored Dogpile.com users’ increased time online to search for information, shop for online deals, connect with family and friends, and do just about anything else on the Web,” said John Rodkin, general manager of search for Dogpile.com. "By providing search results from the leading search engines, Dogpile offers more comprehensive information for its broad audience of Internet users.”

Despite news of the recession making headlines throughout the year, Dogpile users searched for online retailers or for store locations. Walmart topped the charts, beating out Amazon.com, and Home Depot was searched more often than Lowes. Searches for coupons and promotional codes were also popular terms, indicating that while Dogpile users were doing more shopping online, they were also looking for great shopping deals.

Dogpile.com users also preoccupied themselves with searches on the site for lighter diversions. The reality shows, "Jon and Kate Plus 8,” "Dancing with the Stars” and "American Idol,” all ranked high on Dogpile’s favorite fetch list, as did news on the reality star wannabes - Balloon Boy’s dad and the White House crashers. New additions to this year’s list of top female celebrities included Megan Fox, Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle. Three popular female celebrities - Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan – didn’t make the top 10 cut in 2009 for the first time in several years. News of Michael Jackson’s untimely and unfortunate death propelled his standing to the top male celebrity spot. However, male celebrities like Chris Brown and Tiger Woods, or friends of celebrities, like Bernie Madoff, were all found on Dogpile’s fetch list for their inappropriate actions that led them to the dog house.

It was no surprise that Facebook took the top search term position overall on Dogpile.com. Other social networking sites appeared as popular search sites this year as well, reflecting a dramatic increase in social networking for Internet users.
