DeVry Inc. Collaborates with Sophia to Offer Faculty and Staff Innovative Online Site to Create and Share Knowledge

DeVry Inc. (NYSE: DV) is working in conjunction with Sophia to pilot a new licensed version of its technology platform that enables faculty and students to create and share knowledge through multimedia instruction and online discussion.

The platform, which combines some of the best features of popular social media sites, focuses solely on education and is a first-of-its-kind online social teaching application that extends the learning process beyond the traditional constraints of the physical or online classroom.

DeVry Inc. is the parent company of DeVry University, where the private licensed version of Sophia will be piloted by graduate students enrolled in business communications class this fall. Sophia allows DeVry University to create and manage its unique online community and enriches it with broader peer group collaboration, efficient sharing of content, and student performance and usage data.

"DeVry is focused on discovering new ways to enhance the learning experience for our students,” said Jeff Dunn, director of education technology and research & development for DeVry Inc. "We are excited to offer Sophia to our students and faculty as an innovative way to share ideas and learn from their peers. This project is part of our vision to be the leader in the use of technology in the educational process.”

Sophia’s new licensed option provides a Web 2.0 platform that allows faculty to create supplemental learning materials that can be shared. It also enables students to create their own multimedia learning modules to teach each other, demonstrate their knowledge of concepts and enhance learning retention through active engagement. Materials created on the site can remain indefinitely for use by future classes and instructors.

"We created Sophia to enable learners and teachers to connect beyond the classroom,” said Don Smithmier, founder and chief executive officer of Sophia. "We look forward to working with DeVry to provide a platform that will enable their teachers to utilize social media features to advance the teaching and learning process.”
