Con-way Freight Driver Named to ATA'S ''America's Road Team''
Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload carrier and subsidiary of Con-way
Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that the American Trucking
Associations (ATA) has named Dennis Day, a Con-way driver from
Lawrenceville, Ga., to its premier "America’s
Road Team” for 2007-2008.
The 16 captains comprising "America’s
Road Team” will spend the next two years
representing the trucking industry and delivering its highway safety
message to the motoring public, the media, fellow drivers, driver
training students, and at community and school events. They will also
have the opportunity to talk with public officials about truck safety
and security issues, as well as the importance of the trucking industry.
Members of "America’s
Road Team” were selected from 35 finalists
nominated by their respective organizations. To qualify for the team
each finalist went before a panel of judges from the trucking industry
and media, and was evaluated for knowledge of trucking industry safety
issues and practices. In addition the drivers’
community service experience was reviewed, as well as their interview
and communications skills. Overall, members of the 2007-2008 "America’s
Road Team” have a collective 366 years of
driving experience and nearly 30.5 million accident-free miles. Only
candidates who are company drivers or owner-operators for a
full-dues-paying ATA member company are considered.
"Dennis has achieved an extraordinary safety
record over his long tenure as a professional truck driver, and he is
truly deserving of this distinction,” said
David S. McClimon, president of Con-way Freight. "Safety
is paramount in this industry, and having someone like Dennis —
who lives out our safety message every day —
involved in educating and informing the motoring public about this issue
has great merit. Dennis will serve as an excellent representative for
the three million truck drivers who keep freight moving in this country.”
Day, who hails from Lawrenceville, Ga., has been a professional truck
driver for 27 years and has driven more than two million accident-free
miles. In addition, he has earned an impressive amount of safety honors,
winning the Georgia State Truck Driving Championship seven times and
receiving Georgia’s Driver of the Year award
in 1998 from the Georgia Motor Trucking Association (GMTA). Day has
served as a member of Georgia’s Road Team for
two years and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to safety and
professional performance that made him uniquely qualified for the
national ATA team. Day is also an active member of several industry
organizations, including Highway Watch and Trucker Buddy.
Day joins a distinguished list of Con-way drivers who have been selected
over the years as captains for the ATA’s "America’s
Road Team.” These include Bob Diaz, Bruce
Andrews, Mark Stamper, Linda Nodland, Al Gerber, Darren Beard, Ina Daly,
David May and Jeff Vermillion.
