City of Carlsbad Selects Lawson Human Resource Management Applications to Help Automate Processes and Cut Costs

Lawson Software (Nasdaq: LWSN) today announced that the City of Carlsbad, Calif., has signed a contract to implement multiple Lawson enterprise applications to help improve its human resources operations. The implementation will include solutions from the Lawson Human Resource Management suite – including Lawson Payroll and Lawson Employee and Manager Self-Service – as well as Lawson Business Intelligence and Lawson ProcessFlow Integrator productivity tools. These applications will help the city automate and streamline human resource processes and help strengthen its overall workflow efficiency. The contract was signed during Lawson’s third quarter of fiscal year 2010, which ended Feb. 28, 2010.

The City of Carlsbad is home to more than 100,000 residents and is one of the leading tourist destinations along the Southern California coastline. The city experienced rapid population growth in recent years, due in part to its location, and now employs more than 1,000 employees. Given this growth, along with increased pressure to reduce costs, the city sought a more efficient software system to help it efficiently manage payroll and benefit requirements for its employees.

"Our existing system is laden with many manual and duplicative processes and simply does not have the functionality we need to support our workforce,” said Gordon Peterson, IT director for the City of Carlsbad. "We selected Lawson because the solutions help address our business needs, there is good value and because of Lawson’s experience in the public sector.”

Specifically, Lawson’s solutions will bring together core Lawson HR applications and business productivity tools, including:

  • Human Resource Management, which will help reduce the time, effort and expense city authorities need to spend on day-to-day HR administration tasks, which can ultimately help increase productivity.
  • Employee and Manager Self-Service, which will give individual employees more direct access to their personal data, which frees up time and resources to focus on more strategic, higher value HR activities.
  • Payroll, which will help streamline and better manage payroll processes.
  • Business Intelligence, which will help improve operational effectiveness and accountability by facilitating timely, accurate information available to city personnel from a centralized system.
  • ProcessFlow Integrator, which will aid in speeding up the variety of approvals that occur in HR, including performance reviews, payroll/salary, benefit administration and new hire requisitions, while addressing the need for efficiencies and cost containment.

"While budget challenges continue to plague municipal governments, many cities are looking for ways to increase worker productivity to help reduce costs,” said Brian Murphy, general manager, Public Sector for Lawson. "The decision for the City of Carlsbad to upgrade its existing HR and business processes will not only help drive efficiencies, but will also help free up time at the administrative HR level, allowing employees to focus on more strategic activities to better address citizens’ needs.”
