The decision was made by a unanimous vote at the city council meeting in July and the official contract was recently signed by Bill Bridgeo, Augusta city manager. As part of the contract, Summit Natural Gas of Maine will invest $63 million in infrastructure to provide natural gas service in the city of Augusta, for a total of more than 130 miles of pipeline, more than any other natural gas company in the area.
"The City of Augusta has found Summit to be excellent to work with - pragmatic, flexible and fair. The city looks forward to the economic benefits from Summit's commitment to having natural gas available to more than 50 percent of our residents and businesses by 2015, and 90 percent by 2019," said Ralph St. Pierre, City of Augusta assistant city manager and finance director.
Construction crews totaling more than 400 workers are currently working across the Kennebec Valley from Pittston to Madison installing 68 miles of steel pipe and 66 miles of plastic distribution pipe in various communities throughout the region.
