Buckley Radio Signs for Arbitron Portable People Meter Ratings Service in New York
Arbitron Inc. (NYSE: ARB) announced today that Buckley Radio, a top 50 radio broadcasting company that owns 20 stations and the WOR Radio Network, has entered into a multi-year agreement for Arbitron’s radio ratings services that include Portable People Meter (PPMSM) audience measurement services when deployed in New York. Richard Buckley, chairman and chief executive officer of Buckley Broadcast Group commented, "WOR Radio 710 is a leading talk radio station in the country and we have always been on the cutting edge of broadcasting technology. We were the first AM station in New York to go HD. In signing for the Arbitron Portable People Meter service in New York, we are taking advantage of the most advanced audience ratings technology to better serve our advertisers and our listeners.” "The Portable People Meter will provide additional integrity to the ratings results which we believe will be embraced by the advertisers on Buckley Radio,” said Carol Hanley, senior vice president, Sales, Arbitron. "With wide spread industry use, the Portable People Meter will help radio enhance its credibility among advertisers and help improve the programming it offers to listeners.” The Portable People Meter, an electronic audience measurement technology that has been in U.S. market trials since 2001, is scheduled to be used in the top 50 markets in place of the current paper and pencil diary method that the company has employed to collect radio audience estimates since 1965. About WOR Founded in 1922, WOR 710 HD is New York’s oldest privately-owned and continuously-operated radio station. As a top talk radio station in the country, it has continually made history with its award-winning broadcasts and remotes. WOR provides a well-rounded schedule of informational and lifestyle programming, featuring personalities such as Joe Bartlett, Donna Hanover, Joan Hamburg, Dr. Joy Browne, Bill O’Reilly, Ellis Henican, Lynne White, Michael Savage, Lionel, Dr. Ronald Hoffman, and Joey Reynolds. WOR 710 HD is a Buckley Broadcasting Corporation radio station, and it is the first AM Radio station in New York to broadcast in the new HD format. About the Portable People Meter The Arbitron Portable People Meter system uses a passive audience measurement device – about the size of a small cell phone – to track consumer exposure to media and entertainment, including broadcast, cable and satellite television; terrestrial, satellite and online radio as well as cinema advertising and many types of place-based electronic media. Carried throughout the day by randomly selected survey participants, the PPM device can track when and where they watch television, listen to radio as well as how they interact with other forms of media and entertainment. In its current form, the PPM detects inaudible codes embedded in the audio portion of media and entertainment content delivered by broadcasters, content providers and distributors. The company is field testing an enhanced version of the meter that can also collect audio signatures for any radio station, which are later matched to signatures collected by an in-market monitoring system. At the end of the day, the meter is placed in a docking station that extracts the codes and signatures and sends them to a central computer. The PPM is equipped with a motion sensor, a patented quality control feature unique to the system, which allows Arbitron to confirm the compliance of the PPM survey participants every day. About Buckley Radio Buckley Radio owns and operates twenty radio stations in seven markets. In addition, the WOR Radio Network is operated as an independent syndicated programming provider with affiliates in over 400 markets. About Arbitron Arbitron Inc.
