Braintech Awarded Sub-Contract for Naval Research Project
Braintech, Inc., (OTC BB: BRHI) will partner with BAE Systems, PaR
Systems, and Carnegie Mellon University as a team participant for the
Office of Naval Research Automated Weapons Assembly (AWA) project. The
team has eight months to complete Phase I, a period in which they will
demonstrate feasibility of a system concept through analysis, modeling
and simulation as well as identify ship impacts and risks associated
with the project.
The AWA project objective is to unpack weapon components from storage
containers and safely assemble them onboard ships in high sea
situations. The Navy currently requires 500 to 1000 square feet of deck
space for the time-consuming, labor-intensive and ergonomically
challenging task of manual assembly. Automation of the process is
expected to reduce the required manpower by 25 percent, maximize
available stowage space and reduce the vulnerability of weapon staging
areas.
"Braintech’s
expertise in Vision Guided Robotics and years of successful development
and implementation in the automotive industry stand to provide the Navy
with a great technological advantage,” said
Rick Weidinger, CEO Braintech, Inc. "We have
focused the last few months on spreading the company into the Government
and Defense space and are pleased to be working on such a dynamic
project. I see this as the first of many more Government projects to
come."
"We have been intrigued by Braintech’s
technologies in the past and look forward to working together to develop
leading edge Vision Guided Robotic solutions in pursuit of a Phase II
award.” stated Albert Sturm, CTO PaR Systems
Adam Marsh, BAE Systems Staff Engineer and AWA Program Manager added, "Leveraging
each of our unique strengths, I believe we have assembled the team best
equipped to meet the ONR’s objectives for this
important project.”
Two other teams involving Foster-Miller and General Dynamics Robotic
Systems will compete to be the single selected team following Phase I.
Phase II will see the selected team design, fabricate and test the
technology towards implementation on all emerging and retrofitted
existing air-capable naval platforms.
