Borland(R) StarTeam(R) 2008 Dramatically Improves Performance for Geographically Distributed Development Teams

Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ:BORL), www.borland.com, the global leader in Open Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), today announced the availability of Borland® StarTeam® 2008, its software change and configuration management (SCCM) solution. Unlike other SCCM technologies, Borland StarTeam 2008 maintains a single repository in tandem with remote-cached information as opposed to replicating data which has the potential for conflicting changes and increased systems overhead. This approach offers significant enhancements to usability and performance for easy, instant access to application lifecycle artifacts, whether teams are distributed around the office or around the world. Part of Borland’s Open ALM product portfolio, Borland StarTeam provides a single source of truth for coordinating and managing software change and configuration management processes. The comprehensive, unified SCCM solution promotes team communication and collaboration through centralized control of project activities and digital assets. Gartner, Inc. recently positioned Borland in the visionaries quadrant of its "Magic Quadrant for Software Change and Configuration for Distributed Platforms, 2008” report.1 Borland StarTeam 2008, a core component of Borland’s Change Management solution, adds remote caching of non-file objects, such as change requests, requirements and tasks, with minimal latency and near-instant access to activities and assets, regardless of location. With the new StarTeam release, enterprise organizations can be more effective in managing not just file assets, but managing all of the activity that drives change to file assets. This innovative approach provides the performance levels expected from a locally available application, along with lower cost of ownership from reduced administration and inexpensive hardware platform support. Enterprise customers are seeing immediate value – one StarTeam customer streamlined its infrastructure from 80 servers serving 4,000 users, down to just 15 servers supporting 25,000 users in 160 locations worldwide. "With the majority of companies using distributed development models today, it is critical to maintain a secure, scaleable and reliable infrastructure for change management, while also keeping costs down,” said Corné Human, director of product marketing for Borland. "The Borland solution can reduce the expense of supporting geographically distributed development with what we believe is the most compelling cost and performance value proposition available in the market today.” Traditionally, there have been two approaches for supporting geographically distributed development, each with significant tradeoffs. Centralization saves money, but typically cripples performance. Alternatively, replication offers reasonable performance due to network-near assets, but can drain budgets from hardware, software and staff duplication. The latest version of Borland StarTeam offers the best of both worlds, significantly extending the value of distributed development. Borland StarTeam 2008’s support for geographically distributed development is unique due to: Superior Performance - StarTeam’s architecture was designed for efficiency and performance optimization over wide area networks, delivering content up to 24 times faster when caching is enabled, compared to traditional solutions, dramatically increasing developer productivity. Low Administrative Cost - StarTeam delivers powerful economic benefits by eliminating the duplication of expensive server hardware and additional server license fees to cover remote sites, as well as reducing the need for admin staff and training. With Borland’s self-administering distribution and by running on inexpensive hardware, customers are reporting up to 68 percent in cost savings in just the first year of deployment. Improved Usability - A number of enhancements make StarTeam easier than ever for the user to merge distributed content contributions. The solution also supports powerful cross-linking between assets maintained in separate projects, which in turn allows users to cross traditional project boundaries to simplify and consolidate enterprise-wide processes. Part of Borland’s Open ALM Portfolio - With best of breed integrations into requirements management, performance and functional testing, as well as for UML modeling and design, StarTeam can be easily extended into a broader ALM solution through deep integrations and process enablement capabilities.
