Boak & Sons, Inc. Involves Boardman's First Grade Students in Their Annual Safety Day Meeting
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, Dec. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Boak & Sons, Inc. is a commercial and residential contracting company in Youngstown, Ohio specializing in roofing, siding, gutters, insulation and sheet metal installation. Every year, the company holds their Annual Safety Day Meeting to update the entire company on new safety regulations and updates in company policies. This year, the meeting was held on Friday, December 6 where Christmas cards were handed out to employees that were colored by the first grade classes in Boardman Local School District.
The idea came from a coloring contest held by Boak & Sons between the first grade classes of the three elementary schools in the district; Robinwood Lane, West Boulevard and Stadium Drive. One student from each school was chosen as a winner and received a $25 Handel's Ice Cream gift card. One overall winner was chosen from the three finalists and was awarded over $500 worth of art supplies for their school.
Sam Boak, president and founder of Boak & Sons, visited the school Monday morning, December 2 to present the student's award in front of the entire school on their morning news program. Boak collected all of the coloring pages and used them as Christmas cards to hand out during their Safety Day meeting.
"All of the employees of Boak & Sons know how important it is to support our local students and teachers, and this was a fun way for us to do so," said Boak. "There is so much talent in the Boardman Local School District and we wanted to do our part in fostering those students to be able to grow and learn with all the materials they need. We also wanted to spread the Christmas spirit throughout our office and show our employees the support they have from the local community, and the coloring pages were the perfect way to do so."
The Safety Day meeting followed the theme "Things May be Different than they Seem" to explain to employees that sometimes you have to take a step back to fully understand a situation. Vice President of Operations at Boak & Sons, says that this theme should be a fundamental part of the employees' personal and professional lives.
"There are always obstacles to overcome both at work and at home," said White. "We chose this theme to encourage our employees to take a second look at a situation and try to understand where other people are coming from to help them continue to build a cohesive working environment. We focused he message on looking at our tasks differently so we can perform them more efficiently. Continuous improvement is the goal in everything we do."
To go along with the theme, Boak & Sons hosted a guest speaker, Brent Webb, who is a renowned illusionist. Webb is a top motivational entertainer based in Los Angeles, California and Cleveland, Ohio. He uses his skills in illusion to show the audience the power of possibilities and to see beyond their own limitations.
The meeting also covered important company updates, such as employee benefits, pay updates and changes in healthcare and coverage. Presenters from the company's departments such as Human Resources, Marketing, Finance and Operations discussed important changes in each field and how it effects every employee.
Ruth Bowdish, director of training and development from On Demand Drug Testing also did a presentation on current drug culture and how it negatively effects the work force. She also explained how to recognize the signs of someone who is struggling with addiction and resources on how to help them. Boak & Sons is a 100% drug-free, no-tolerance company that regularly drug tests their employees, so Bowdish was a vital part of educating their employees.
Boak & Sons employees were paid to attend this meeting, as they are every year. Sam Boak says making an investment in his employees gives him the best return on investment a businessman could hope for.
"It cost the company over $30,000 to hold this meeting, which includes the cost to feed everyone for the day and bring in guest speakers," said Boak. "I make it a priority to take care of each and every person who works here, ensuring they receive not only the proper training needed to better their skill set, but also just to make them feel appreciated. My employees are my family, and making an investment in them is the best investment I can make as the owner of a company."
