ATMI Purchases Complete Tempus(TM) High-Productivity Combinatorial Research and Development Workflow from Intermolecular
ATMI, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATMI) and Intermolecular, Inc. today announced that
ATMI has purchased Intermolecular’s complete
Tempus™ Fluids-based High-Productivity
Combinatorial™ (HPC) workflow for accelerated
research and development (R&D).
Expanding upon an initial Collaborative Development Program with
Intermolecular, ATMI’s adoption of the Tempus
Fluids-based workflow allows the company to leverage the HPC™
platform as a critical element in the ongoing transformation of its R&D
methodologies. The purchase decision was based on early use of the
Tempus Fluids-based workflow, which enabled ATMI to rapidly develop an
improved process efficiency solution with a major foundry in Taiwan.
Intermolecular is the semiconductor industry’s
only provider of fully integrated combinatorial R&D technology powered
by a set of systems and methodologies that radically accelerates
discovery and integration of new materials, new process technologies and
new device structures.
"The future progress of the semiconductor
industry requires the ability earlier on in the development phase to
make rapid advances in IC materials,” said
Doug Neugold, ATMI chief executive officer. "I’m
enthusiastic about melding ATMI’s process
efficiency mindset, strong customer relationships and technology
portfolio with Intermolecular's technology to deliver faster resolutions
to our customers’ materials challenges. Our
rigorous, data-driven R&D process will be bolstered by the capabilities
of the Intermolecular Tempus workflow, giving our customers better
materials answers faster, for a fraction of the R&D cost they are used
to paying.”
Committed to implementing the most advanced semiconductor materials R&D,
ATMI recognized the Tempus Fluids-based workflow’s
ability to automate rapid parallel processing of multiple simultaneous
materials-research experiments with fully automated wafer metrology and
data analysis.
"This agreement with ATMI, an
industry-leading materials company, further validates our HPC systems
and methodologies for transforming R&D productivity, which enable
competitive differentiation for materials companies, equipment
manufacturers and IC makers,” said David
Lazovsky, Intermolecular’s chief executive
officer.
"The capabilities required of new materials,
and the demands of device manufacturers, are growing at seemingly
exponential rates,” said Tod Higinbotham,
senior vice president and general manager of materials for ATMI. "With
Intermolecular’s Tempus workflow, we are
creating high-throughput materials R&D that is allowing us to assess
hundreds — or thousands —
of research combinations in the time it used to take to assess a dozen.
This research efficiency helps us speed customers’
time to market while reducing their development costs.”
The Tempus Fluids-based workflow includes a series of tools for applying
HPC methods to a variety of applications, such as self-assembly
processes, cleans, wet strip, wet etch and electroless deposition.
Including Intermolecular’s proprietary
informatics system for experiment design, development operations and
data management, the Tempus Fluids-based workflow enables customers to
maximize their return on R&D investment through economical high-speed
development, integration and electrical testing of preferred solutions
from an otherwise unmanageable number of alternatives.
Intermolecular’s HPC technology is built on
three pillars:
Massively Parallel Processing, which automates and enables rapid
processing of multiple experiments,
Throughput-Matched Characterization, which includes fully automated
metrology and e-test infrastructure to rapidly characterize the
physical and electrical performance of developed technologies, and
Automation and Analysis Informatics, a comprehensive, secure Web-based
system that serves as a backbone for integrating processing and
characterization tools into unified R&D workflows.
