CHICAGO, Oct. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) joins with the concerned voices of many other Americans in urging the U.S. Congress and President Obama to quickly come to an agreement on reopening the federal government.  Our 35,000 member safety, health and environmental (SH&E) professionals continue to be hard at work helping responsible employers throughout the nation protect their workers, property, communities and the environment.

However, far too many other employers have demonstrated that they cannot or will not share that commitment, and, as a result, the American people must rely on the oversight and resources provided by federal agencies like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board and the Environmental Protection Agency to help hold all employers to their responsibility to provide safe and healthy workplaces.  Each of these agencies was established by Congress in response to calls by the American people for help in protecting them from workplace-related risks.  No American worker should lose their life because of the inability of those who lead our government to work together to provide those protections.
