Aspect Medical Systems Provides Anesthesia Awareness Patient and Clinical Education Resources Following Premiere of the Movie AWAKE

Aspect Medical Systems (NASDAQ:ASPM), the global market leader in brain monitoring technology, has created patient and clinician-focused resources that present the facts about anesthesia awareness during surgery following the premiere of the movie AWAKE, which occurred in New York City last night. AWAKE, starring Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba is described on the movie’s Web site as "a psychological thriller about a common occurrence called anesthetic awareness.” Awareness under general anesthesia occurs when surgical patients can recall their surroundings or an event—sometimes even pain—related to their surgery. Clinical studies have demonstrated that anesthesia awareness occurs in roughly one patient per thousand receiving general anesthesia. "We realize that people may see the movie or related promotional materials and become concerned about an upcoming surgery. It is important to remember that AWAKE is a piece of fictional entertainment. In reality, anesthesia awareness happens very infrequently and this remote possibility should not deter patients from having surgery,” said Scott Kelley, M.D., anesthesiologist and vice president and medical director of Aspect Medical Systems. "Anesthesia professionals are highly trained individuals who strive to help patients feel comfortable and informed about their experience with anesthesia and to ensure the best possible care of patients in the operating room. Patients should talk with their anesthesia professional before surgery to discuss all of their concerns, including the remote possibility of awareness, the approach to anesthesia that will be used, and how they will be monitored during surgery. Our goal in providing resources for patients and clinicians was to make the process of finding facts and clinical evidence easier for both parties.” Aspect Medical Systems has posted information on its Web site to provide medical professionals and patients with information about anesthesia, the facts and clinical evidence about anesthesia awareness and the role of brain monitoring in surgical care. Resources for anesthesia professionals include: A Web page which summarizes and links to the clinical evidence regarding the incidence of awareness and the role of BIS monitoring in reducing risk: http://www.aspectmedical.com/professionals/safety/default.mspx An interactive database, sponsored by Aspect and developed by Doctor Evidence®, that presents published clinical evidence regarding brain monitoring, including the role of brain monitoring technology in reducing risk of awareness with recall in adults: http://www.doctorevidence.com/brainmonitoring Resources for patients include: A Web page and brochure with answers to questions patients commonly ask about anesthesia and brain monitoring. This information is designed for patients to read prior to having surgery: http://www.aspectmedical.com/patients/ A video that patients can watch to understand how anesthesia works on the body and how a brain monitor can help an anesthesia professional to give each patient just the right amount of anesthesia: http://www.businesswire.com/cgi-bin/mmg.cgi?eid=5547695 Anesthesia providers use many monitoring technologies, in combination with their clinical judgment, to ensure that their patients are unconscious and free of pain during surgical procedures. Brain monitoring technologies are employed by a growing number of anesthesia professionals to help assess patient consciousness and adjust the amount of anesthetic medication during surgery in order to avoid over and under dosing. Numerous clinical studies, as well as a rigorous evidence-based review conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration, have demonstrated the clinical benefits of BIS monitoring. These benefits include improved anesthetic delivery and recovery from anesthesia, as well as reduced risk of awareness in adults - particularly in patients at increased risk. BIS monitoring has been proven to help clinicians reduce the incidence of awareness with recall in at risk adults by 80 percent and is the only brain monitoring technology with clinical evidence and an FDA clearance to support this claim. Today, more than 60 percent of all operating rooms in the U.S. are equipped with BIS monitors and more than 23 million patients have been monitored.
