In the winter months, many ticks will find hosts to carry them through the winter. Often, those hosts may be beloved family pets. Ticks are still a threat to both people and pets in the winter season, but symptoms of a tick-borne disease are often mistaken in the winter for other ailments. All pet owners should be on the look-out for some signs that their pet may be suffering from one of the many illnesses contracted by tick bites to start treatments as soon as possible. Alternative EarthCare shares four tell-tale signs of tick-borne disease in pets.
1. Fever Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis are just a few tick-borne diseases that could cause a fever in pets. Fevers can, of course, occur for many other reasons, but if accompanied by any other symptoms or if the fever is persistent, see a vet immediately. Fevers will often be accompanied by fatigue, another sign of tick-borne disease.
2. Joint pain, lameness, and paralysis Ticks secrete a toxin that can cause joint pain, lameness, or even paralysis. The hind legs are usually the first area to show signs of this condition and should be monitored carefully. At the first signs of an issue, contact your vet. The condition can rapidly spread to the rest of the limbs and is often followed by difficulty breathing or swallowing and can even lead to death.
3. Flu-type symptoms Vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite are common symptoms of all tick-borne illnesses.Vomiting and diarrhea are pretty common with pets and not necessarily a sign of a tick-borne illness, but if they persist longer than a day or if accompanied by any other symptoms, it could be a sign of tick-borne disease and treatment should be sought immediately.
4. Neurological issues Rocky Mountain spotted fever and anaplasmosis can both cause neurological issues such as stumbling or even seizures. In the case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, liver, kidney, and heart issues can also occur. Don't let the name of the disease fool you. Both these diseases can be transmitted by ticks in the Northeast and can be very dangerous. Seek treatment immediately if any neurological symptoms present themselves.
