TRADE: Indonesia To Accept WTO Ruling In Favor Of Brazilian Poultry

(RTTNews) - Indonesia signed a non-appeal agreement with the World Trade Organization (WTO) giving up of contesting a report that gave Brazil a favorable opinion on poultry exports to the Asian country, said the Brazilian Association of Animal Proteins (ABPA) in a statement.

According to ABPA, the deadline for making poultry shipments feasible was reduced by at least six months after Indonesia's decision, considering 60 days for the appealing, 90 days for the analysis of the request and other procedural terms.

A panel to examine protectionist practices had been opened in 2015 at Brazil's request, claiming that Indonesia placed barriers that violated WTO agreements to prevent the entry of Brazilian poultry into the country.

In the report, the WTO recommended amending the protectionist legislation and practices of the Indonesian government. The decision should be implemented from the end of November.

"After almost ten years of negotiations, we have a positive horizon for exporting to this market. This is a victory that also meets the expectations of the Indonesian population," said Francisco Turra, chief executive of ABPA.

Indonesia has a per capita consumption of poultry of 5.7 kilograms per year, representing an average annual consumption of about 1,506 million tons, with growth potential.
