Redback Networks Broadband Platform Accepted for US Rural and Community Deployments Through USDA RUS Listing; Redback Set to Help Bring Next-Generation Broadband Services for ''Triple Play'' of Video, Voice and Internet Data to Rural America

    Business Editors/High-Tech Editors

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2005--Redback Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that it is the first vendor of broadband subscriber management platforms to receive the USDA Rural Utilities Service (RUS) listing, which includes its next-generation SmartEdge(R) 400 and 800 product family and its NetOp(TM) Policy Manager. The RUS listing enables independent operating companies (IOCs) and rural local exchange carriers (RLECs) to obtain RUS broadband loan and grant programs to bring the "Triple Play" combination of high-speed broadband services for video, voice and data to local communities and rural areas. According to the Federal Register (Volume 70, Number 42), $2.157 billion is available this year for loans and loan guarantees under the Rural Broadband Access Loan and Loan Guarantee Program.
"Living in a rural area no longer means having to be without access to vast, high-speed Broadband Internet content, including video, gaming and distance learning, and Redback Networks is proud to be a part of this effort," said Marco Wanders, Chief Marketing Officer, Redback Networks. "Although Redback platforms support many of the world's largest carrier broadband networks, we have built some unique capabilities into the product line that makes deployment in a rural setting cost-effective for the smaller carrier both from a CAPEX and OPEX perspective. These capabilities, in conjunction with this important funding program, will help make wide-spread rural broadband a reality."
The Smart Broadband Network, enabled by Redback's SmartEdge Service Gateway platform, provides a single, fully integrated network capable of delivering video, voice and data with a robust infrastructure optimized for value-added services. Smart Broadband Networks from Redback provides bandwidth, scalability, intelligence and reliability to meet the demands of delivering video or television programming over broadband, Voice over IP (VoIP) and Internet data designed to provide an optimal consumer experience and for critical business and personal connectivity. Next-generation broadband services also can give local businesses a greater presence in the world market and make distance learning and remote medical assistance and management a greater reality.
Next-generation Smart Broadband Networks enable a personal delivery infrastructure that knows users, understands content, governs bandwidth, assures quality and brokers services. Redback's flagship platform, the SmartEdge Service Gateway family, combines advanced broadband aggregation and management with advanced edge routing and IP services in a purpose-built platform.
