Planting of trees and shrubs: An important step in Montréal-Trudeau's acoustic screen project

MONTRÉAL, Sept. 27, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - As Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) completes the construction of an acoustic screen to separate the residential sector of Thorncrest Avenue in Dorval from the airport, more than 500 trees and shrubs are being planted to improve the visual aspect of the project. To mark this milestone, a ceremony was held with Edgar Rouleau, the Mayor of the City of Dorval, and Philippe Rainville, the President and Chief Executive Officer of ADM, in the presence of citizens of the sector.

In order, from left to right: M. Edgar Rouleau, Mayor of Dorval; Joanne Bergeron, Vice President, Human Resources and Vice President Sustainability and Environment, Aéroports de Montréal; Margo Héron, City councillor, Dorval; M. Philippe Rainville, President and CEO of Aéroports de Montréal (CNW Group/Aéroports de Montréal)

The new acoustic screen will reduce the noise and visual impacts of airport operations, which moved closer to the residential sector in 2017.

About the planting of trees and shrubs:

  • These trees and shrubs further enrich the 25-metre strip of woodland already preserved around the acoustic screen.
  • Their planting offsets the cutting of trees that occurred during the development of lot 7.
  • The trees and shrubs were selected in collaboration with citizens of the sector following a consultation process.
  • Maintaining a good relationship with the community is a top priority for ADM.

About the acoustic screen:

  • ADM has invested $5.5 million in the construction of the acoustic screen.
  • The structure has a maximum height of 5 metres and a total length of 850 metres.
  • The technology used involves the installation of acoustic insulation with a plaited willow covering to improve the visual impact of this infrastructure. It is the most ecological product on the market, developed by a Québec company.

Quotation

"This planting project is the result of an amicable agreement between the residents of the sector and ADM. Their collaboration and, above all, their understanding over the last few months have facilitated the work. From the outset of construction, it was essential for ADM to involve citizens. After all, they are our closest neighbours! I would like to thank them, as well as recognize the constant support we received from the Mayor of the City of Dorval, Edgar Rouleau, and municipal councillor Margo Héron throughout the project," said ADM CEO Philippe Rainville.
