LGS COO David Bishop Awarded George E. Pake Prize for Outstanding Work and Leadership by a Physicist

LGS, a subsidiary of Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) dedicated to serving the U.S. government community, announced today that its Chief Operating Officer/Chief Technology Officer, Dr. David Bishop was awarded the 2009 George E. Pake Prize.

The George E. Pake Prize recognizes and encourages outstanding work by physicists combining original research accomplishments with leadership in the management of research or development in industry.

The award is given by the American Physical Society (APS) and was endowed in 1983 by the Xerox Corporation in recognition of the outstanding achievements of George E. Pake, a research physicist and director of industrial research.

According to the nominating committee, Dr. Bishop was selected as the 2009 award recipient because of "his effective leadership of AT&T/Lucent/Bell Labs research during an especially turbulent time in the telecommunications industry, and for his seminal contributions to low-temperature physics research.

Before joining LGS, Dr. Bishop spent 28 years in telecommunications research and development working in Bell Labs for both AT&T and Lucent Technologies. Dr. Bishop is a Bell Labs Fellow, and in his previous positions with Lucent served as Nanotechnology Research vice president, for Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies and was president of the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium and the Physical Sciences Research vice president.
