Honduran President Calls for Peace and Order During Final Election Count
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, Dec. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As the final votes in Honduras's election are tabulated, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernándezissued the following statement:
"I am calling on all Hondurans to calmly and peacefully await the Supreme Electoral Tribunal's official results. Now that the world's eyes are on us, we have the opportunity to set an example of civility, maturity, and respect for one another.
"I promised this nation and the international community, a free and fair election.
"Today, I stand by my promise. This election belongs to the people of Honduras. I will honor the choice they have made.
"I ask all Honduran citizens to do the same. Any violence on the streets of the country I love pains me. I dedicated my first four years in office to making Honduras a peaceful nation. And after this election is over, I am prepared redouble my efforts in pursuit of peace and public security across our great nation.
"By recognizing the Supreme Electoral Tribunal's results, we will strengthen our country's democratic institutions and keep the fate of Honduras in the hands of its people."
