Business Editors/High-Tech Editors
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2005--Redback Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Golden Belt Telephone Association, Inc., a local exchange cooperative representing the "golden belt" region of Kansas, has selected Redback's SmartEdge(R) Service Gateway platform for deploying broadcast video services over a next-generation broadband network. Redback is working with integrator Millennium Networks to provide the next-generation network.
Golden Belt plans to deliver next-generation services and digital television to its customers as a part of a bundled "Triple Play" of voice, data and video. The design, integration and deployment of Golden Belt's next-generation network was a collaborative effort between Millennium Networks, a telecommunication engineering and integration firm, and system integration done directly by Redback.
"Next generation broadband has the power to deliver television content in exciting new ways," said Gerald Washburn, general manager, Golden Belt Telephone Association. "We believe that the SmartEdge Service Gateway platform from Redback Networks provides us with the power, flexibility, intelligence, reliability and scale to provide the leading television and Internet services to our customers today while also providing a path for future services."
"We are pleased to help Golden Belt create a Smart Broadband Network that can deliver the value of today's video services as well as the promise of tomorrow's," said Marco Wanders, chief marketing officer for Redback Networks. "Today we work to help drive broadband innovation with the largest carriers in the world as well as more regional ones. We believe the power of next-generation broadband can revolutionize the delivery of video, voice and data, giving carriers and service providers of all sizes tremendous advantages in rapidly changing markets."
The Smart Broadband Network, based on SmartEdge Service Gateway systems deployed in 18 Point of Presence (POP) locations, is new infrastructure for Golden Belt rather than an upgrade or expansion of an existing network. The SmartEdge Service Gateway systems will perform all video multicast replication, subscriber and session management, integrated Quality of Service (QoS) and high-performance edge routing. They will connect directly with DSLAMs in each POP. The systems will accommodate both DSL and WiFi access.
The Smart Broadband Network provides a single, fully integrated network capable of delivering video, voice and data with a robust infrastructure optimized for value-added services. Smart Broadband Networks from Redback provide bandwidth, scalability, intelligence and reliability to meet the demands of delivering video over broadband, VoIP and Internet data for the optimal consumer experience. The result is a personal delivery infrastructure that knows users, understands content, governs bandwidth, assures quality and brokers services. Redback's flagship platform, the SmartEdge Service Gateway family, combines advanced broadband aggregation and management with advanced edge routing and IP services in a purpose-built platform.
