Financial Education Benefits Center Applauds Move Toward Telehealth
SAN RAMON, Calif., June 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Telehealth is becoming the quick answer to health concerns for people who can't make it in to see a doctor for any reason. Financial Education Benefits Center (FEBC) offers comprehensive financial and lifestyle benefits for their members, including access to a highly rated telehealth service.
Busy schedules, remote locations, transportation challenges and high costs are just some of the things blocking people from seeing a doctor when they need to. As a result, many of these people wait until their health concern escalates before getting necessary attention. In some cases, putting off doctor visits can result in higher treatment costs.
"It's tough to consider going to a doctor when it's so inconvenient or costly," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. "We support our members in working toward prevention in regard to health concerns by staying in shape mentally and physically. But when they do need it, we offer telehealth services so quick health advice is at their fingertips."
According to Pivot Health, 40 percent of people with private health insurance with deductibles of at least 5 percent of their income put off seeing a doctor because of a high deductible. To show how this can be detrimental, Pivot Health told the story of a 49-year-old woman who put off seeing a doctor for gastrointestinal bleeding believing that she would save money if she waited just a few months until after the first of the year. By the time she saw a doctor, she had stage three cancer and needed surgeries and chemotherapy, which were much more expensive than the treatment would have been if she had not waited.
While that story may seem like an extreme case, it should inspire caution in anyone delaying a doctor visit. To those who are inclined to put off visits, there is a solution. Telehealth is becoming the best option for people who experience common healthcare access barriers. Here are some benefits of using a telehealth service:
- People who live far away would not have to drive a long distance to talk to a doctor.
- Those concerned with cost would not have to worry about paying a high deductible, missing out on income from missing a few hours of work or paying transportation costs.
- People with busy schedules wouldn't have to spend a lot of time traveling to the doctor, waiting in the waiting room and waiting more in the exam room. They would simply schedule a short phone call.
- People with transportation challenges would be able to get health advice wherever they are.
- Staying at home would keep potentially vulnerable patients from picking up germs in the doctor's office that can lead to more serious concerns.
All these things point to why telehealth is picking up speed in today's health industry. In fact, Texas recently scored a big win for telehealth in the form of legislation enabling telehealth patients to do an introductory visit by video call instead of requiring an in-office visit. This may encourage people who would normally put off even the introductory visit to sign up and get access before they really need it.
"We're hoping that telehealth access will help people stay healthy and turn to preventative care instead of reactionary care," says Martinez. "Telehealth is an exciting development in the health industry and we're proud to offer it as one of our services to new and existing members."
