Cognos Customer U.S. Army ARDEC Selected as 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Winner
Cognos® (NASDAQ: COGN) (TSX: CSN), the world
leader in business intelligence and performance
management solutions, today announced that one of its long-time
customers, the U.S. Army’s Armament Research,
Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), was recently presented the
prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s
highest Presidential honor for organizational performance excellence.
ARDEC is the first Department of Defense organization in history to
receive the award.
Established in 1987 and presented annually by the President of the
United States, the Baldrige Award acknowledges businesses, education,
health care and nonprofit organizations that apply and are judged to be
outstanding in seven key areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer
and market focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; human
resource focus; process management; and results.
"I am pleased to join President Bush in
congratulating the five outstanding organizations that have been named
to receive this year’s Baldrige Award,”
noted U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez in a November 20
press release announcing award winners. "The
organizations we recognize today have given us superb examples of
innovation, excellence and world-class performance. They serve as role
models for organizations of all kinds striving to improve effectiveness
and increase value to their customers.” "We are absolutely thrilled by our selection
as a 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipient,”
said ARDEC Director Dr. Joseph A. Lannon. "Each
member of our workforce is responsible for bringing this honor to our
organization. The men and women of ARDEC earned this award as a direct
result of what they are doing for our warfighters. I couldn’t
be prouder of each and every ARDEC employee.”
A Cognos customer since 1995, ARDEC uses Cognos 8 Business Intelligence
(BI) to deliver a single view of business data across multiple sources,
including critical financial data found in their SAP ERP system. This
has helped ARDEC gain comprehensive visibility into programs undertaken
on behalf of its Army clients, improving decision-making and assuring
that development projects stay on track and on budget. Documented
savings and cost avoidances have totaled more than $423 million over a
ten year period, which have been identified and redirected back into
supporting the mission of the funding organization. More information on

ARDEC, and a well-deserved reflection of their commitment to driving
quality, best practices and performance excellence across the
organization,” said Dave Laverty, Senior
Vice-President of Global Marketing and Chief Marketing Officer at
Cognos. "Cognos and ARDEC have enjoyed a long
history of success, working together to overcome the traditional
obstacles to enabling optimal performance management within an SAP
environment. We are very proud of our work with ARDEC and take extra
pride in seeing one of our key government customers in performance
management gain national recognition for their efforts.”
The 2007 Baldrige Award recipients were selected from among a field of
84 applicants. The evaluation process, conducted by an independent board
of examiners, included about 1,000 hours of review and on-site visits by
teams of examiners to clarify questions and verify information in the
applications, which were initially submitted last May.
ARDEC officials now will prepare to accept the award at a ceremony to be
held in Washington, D.C. in early 2008.
About The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards:
Named after Malcolm Baldrige, the 26th Secretary of Commerce, the
Baldrige Award was established by Congress in 1987 to enhance the
competitiveness and performance of U.S. businesses and expanded in 1998
to include education and health care. In 2007, non-profit organizations,
including charities, trade and professional associations, and government
agencies, will be eligible to receive a Baldrige Award. The award
promotes excellence in organizational performance, recognizes the
achievements and results of U.S. organizations, and publicizes
successful performance strategies. The award may be presented to five
types of organizations: manufacturers, service companies, small
businesses, education organizations and health care organizations. The
award is not given for specific products or services.
Since 1988, 72 organizations have received Baldrige Awards. The Baldrige
program is managed by NIST in conjunction with the private sector. As a
non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Technology
Administration, NIST promotes U.S. innovation and industrial
competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and
technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our
quality of life. More information on the Malcolm Baldrige Award can be
