CIGNA Provides 2009 Outlook
CIGNA Corporation (NYSE:CI) today provided its 2009 outlook during its third quarter earnings conference call with analysts and investors. CIGNA currently estimates full year 2009 consolidated adjusted income from operations1,2 to be in the range of $1.09 billion to $1.18 billion or $4.00 to $4.30 per share3, including $710 million to $790 million for the Health Care segment.
CIGNA's outlook for adjusted income from operations1,2 and earnings per share3 excludes the impact of any future stock repurchase and includes a projection of Guaranteed Minimum Death Benefits also known as Variable Annuity Death Benefits (VADBe) results to be approximately break-even for full-year 2009. This projection assumes that equity market conditions and volatility levels will return to more stable levels in 2009. Actual VADBe results could differ materially from current projections, particularly if significant equity market volatility continues to persist in 2009. Please refer to CIGNA's Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2007 for a description of risk factors and critical accounting estimates regarding the VADBe business.
CIGNA expects its medical membership in 2009 to decline by approximately 2%.

CIGNA measures the financial results of its segments using Segment Earnings (Loss), which is defined as income (loss) from continuing operations before net realized investment results. Adjusted income (loss) from operations is defined as segment earnings excluding special items and results of CIGNA's Guaranteed Minimum Income Benefits (GMIB) business, which are more volatile after the implementation of SFAS No. 157 and more difficult to project into the future. Adjusted income (loss) from operations is a measure of profitability used by CIGNA's management because it presents the underlying results of operations of CIGNA's businesses and permits analysis of trends in underlying revenue, expenses and net income. This measure is not determined in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and should not be viewed as a substitute for the most directly comparable GAAP measures, which are segment earnings (loss), income from continuing operations, and net income. |
