ANSI Announces Winners of 2017 Student Paper Competition
NEW YORK, Sept. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), coordinator of the U.S. voluntary standardization system, and its Committee on Education (CoE) are pleased to announce that Tiana Ashley Khong of San Jose State University of California is the first-place winner of the annual ANSI student paper competition. Qahtan Al Jammali of the City University of New York is the second-place winner. The contest is part of an ANSI-led effort to raise awareness about the strategic importance of standards and conformance among U.S. undergraduate and graduate students.
The competition required participants to submit papers that exemplify the theme, "The World in 2050." Submissions were open to students of any discipline currently enrolled in an associate, undergraduate, or graduate-level program at the U.S. academic institute of higher learning.
The winning paper, titled "The World in 2050: Safety by Design," introduces readers to a futuristic world in which international governments and technology companies have created safety-by-design service standards with the motto "safety before innovation." The paper emphasizes how the rise of Internet of Things (IoT) will lead to innovative intelligent buildings, autonomous vehicles, and smart roads—and these systems will increasingly rely on service safety standards to ensure optimal security for consumers and the public.
The second-place entry, "Cyborg Gen2330," is a letter written by a hybrid human machine, and highlights standards' critical role in the compatibility and safety and well-being of all biological and mechanical constituents of the universe.
Each winner will receive a cash prize for their paper as well as a certificate for themselves and their schools. The winners will also be acknowledged at ANSI's Leadership and Service Awards, to be held on October 18 during World Standards Week.
ANSI's 2018 student paper and video competition is currently open with a deadline of April 27, 2018.
