AMCC Announces a New Member of its Power Architecture Processor Family Targeted for Wireless Infrastructure and Enterprise Networking Applications
Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ: AMCC), a global leader in
embedded Power Architecture™ processing,
optical transport and storage solutions, announced the newest member of
its embedded processor family of products, the PPC460GT. The
announcement is being made at this week’s
Power Architecture Developer Conference in Austin, Texas, where AMCC is
a Platinum Sponsor. Based on the Power Architecture standard, the
PPC460GT is designed for a wide range of high performance applications
including wireless infrastructure and enterprise networking.
"The throughput and data processing
requirements of next generation wireless infrastructure and enterprise
equipment continue to grow,” said Sam Fuller,
Vice President of Marketing for AMCC. "The
AMCC PPC460GT integrates a high-performance Power Architecture CPU core
with important peripheral interfaces like Serial RapidIO (SRIO), PCI
Express® and Gigabit
Ethernet. Advanced security processing features including IPSec, SSL and
the KASUMI encryption algorithm are also integrated into this low power,
low cost system-on-a-chip solution (SoC). This new embedded processor
further enhances AMCC’s reputation as a
leading innovator and product supplier in the Power Architecture market.”
The PPC460GT features a SoC platform based on the Power Architecture
standard that delivers clock speeds exceeding 1 GHz, along with
increased memory interface performance, advanced connectivity, reduced
power dissipation, security processing acceleration and a smaller form
factor. The PPC460GT is instruction-set compatible with all other AMCC
Power Architecture products, and applications can be easily migrated
from both AMCC processors and those of other Power Architecture vendors
in order to deliver upgraded performance and functionality to product
designers and engineers.
"We are pleased to see other processor
providers support the use of Serial RapidIO for computationally
intensive applications such as 3G/3.5G and WiMAX™
wireless base stations,” said Alan Gatherer,
CTO at Texas Instruments Wireless Infrastructure Group. "As
an early adopter of SRIO technology on our infrastructure-optimized
single and multi-core digital signal processors, TI and its OEM
customers agree that this connectivity solution offers measurable
improvements to processor performance and overall system-level
efficiency.” Performance
The superscalar Power Architecture core of the PPC460GT delivers a
frequency ranging from 667MHz to 1.2 GHz with 2.0 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz.
This processing throughput is significantly higher than is available
from most competitive core offerings. Extensive memory support includes
32-Kbyte Instruction and Data Caches, an on-chip 256-Kbyte L2 cache and
additional 64-Kbytes of on-chip memory mapped SRAM. The PPC460GT also
supports up to four banks of ECC protected DDR2 SDRAM memory with a
maximum capacity of 16 Gbytes.
Connectivity
The PPC460GT features a wide range of peripheral integration and
connectivity options. The processor has an x4 SRIO port, two independent
PCI Express interfaces, a 32-bit PCI V2.3 interface and a 32-bit
external peripheral bus interface. The PPC460GT offers four integrated
10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, two with TCP/IP acceleration, quality of
service (QoS) and Jumbo Frame support with broad connectivity options
including SGMII.
Security
The PPC460GT features a best-in-class Turbo Security Engine that
supports standard security protocols such as IPSec, SSL and DTLS. KASUMI
encryption is also available to support wireless infrastructure
applications. The Turbo Security Engine attaches directly to the
processor bus for the fastest possible system throughput. The engine
also features Public Key Accelerator and True Random Number Generation,
as well as full header/trailer protocol processing. It is compliant with
FIPS-140-2 and ANSI X9.17 Annex C and is also designed to aid customers
in complying with the proposed IEEE P2600™
Standard for Information Technology: Hardcopy Device and System Security.
Power
OEMs face increasingly stringent energy and power requirements for their
products in order to meet ENERGY STAR™ and
similar guidelines set by the EPA and other government organizations.
They are seeking reduced power demands from every component that is
integrated into their products. The PPC460GT is designed to help
customers meet these requirements. Typical power dissipation is
estimated to be 6W @ 1 GHz.
AMCC will begin product sampling in the fourth quarter of 2007.
Distributor suggested resale pricing starts at $55 in 25k quantities.
