ADDING MULTIMEDIA Gemstar-TV Guide Announces Formation of New Cross-Platform Product Development and Technology Group
In a move to significantly enhance the company's productdevelopment and technology efforts, Gemstar-TV Guide International,Inc. (NASDAQ: GMST), a leading media, entertainment and technologycompany, announced today the formation of a new, cross-platformProduct Development and Technology group. The mandate of the groupwill be to enhance existing product plans at the company and todevelop new products and services to further Gemstar-TV Guide'sstrategy to be the leader in television guidance across multiple mediaplatforms. The group's particular focus will be on product innovationfor digital platforms and on integrating the company's technologyresources across businesses.
Joining the company to head up this important new group are SteveShannon, who has been named executive vice president and generalmanager, Product Development and Michael Starkenburg, who has beennamed senior vice president, Technology. Under Steve and Mike, theProduct Development group will work closely with all of the company'sdivisions to expand efforts to develop innovative guidance products inall arenas.
Mr. Shannon has a long history and demonstrated track record ofdeveloping, launching and managing innovative, leading-edge products.He joins Gemstar-TV Guide from Akimbo Systems, Inc., a company hefounded as an Internet-delivered video-on-demand service designed forviewing on televisions. Mr. Shannon was the co-founder of Replay TV,which introduced the world's first digital video recorder; and, atMacromedia, Inc., he conceived of and developed Dreamweaver, ahighly-successful professional web authoring tool. He has an extensivebackground in software development and has held a variety of positionsat such companies as Paramount Pictures, Coopers & Lybrand, MGM/UA,and Capitol Records.
Mr. Starkenburg joins the company after spending the past twoyears running the Starkenburg Group, which provided strategic andoperational technology advice to venture funds and early-stagecompanies. Prior to that, he was a technology partner at The SproutGroup, a $1.6 billion technology and health care venture fund inSilicon Valley. He has a long history of successfully managingtechnology resources at a diverse group of companies includingTickets.com, Cyberian Outpost and America Online. He has also servedas a technology and networking consultant to a variety of clientsincluding the International Monetary Fund, the National Academy ofSciences, the U.S. Department of Housing and the InformationalTechnology Association of America.
